About SWEA
Swedish Women's Education Association International, Inc. is a global non-profit organization for Swedish speaking women who live or have lived abroad. It was founded in Los Angeles in 1979. Princess Christina, Mrs. Magnuson is Honorary President.
SWEA San Francisco was founded in 1982 by Barbro Osher. SWEA's objective is to protect the Swedish language, and to support and promote Swedish culture and traditions. In addition, SWEA will act as an intermediary in supplying personal and professional contacts and establish a network for its members throughout the world. With nearly 8000 members, SWEA currently has about 80 local chapters in 40 countries on five continents. In additional to an annual scholarship program administrated by its parent organization, SWEA International, SWEA San Francisco has its own program recognizing individuals and institutions mostly in the Bay Area. In 2008 major grants were awarded to the Swedish schools and preschools in the Bay Area, St. Erik's Church in San Francisco, SWEA library at the Swedish American Hall, and two major scholarships for academic research or artistic interest with particular relevance to Sweden. Smaller grants were awarded to various cultural groups and organizations with Swedish connecions.
