SWEA, Swedish Women's Educational Association Inc., is a global non-profit organization for Swedish speaking women who live or have lived abroad. SWEA North Carolina was established in 1997. At the moment we are about 110 members. Most of our members live in the Triangle in the area around Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill. This is where most of our activities are held. But we have members all over the Carolinas, with smaller concentrated groups in
Charlotte and Greensboro/Burlington. Our program is varied to suit day- and evening activates to suit all members.
We gather to enjoy our Swedish language, background and culture. SWEA is both a meeting point and a safety net with links all over the world, making life abroad easier, providing support when arriving in a new place or when returning to the home land.
SWEA's objective is to protect the Swedish language, support and inform about our culture and traditions. Also SWEA will act as an intermediary in supplying personal and professional contacts and establish a network for its members throughout the world.
SWEA supports education through scholarships and various projects with a
Swedish connection.
Members gather in both cultural and educational events through food, traditions and craft at lunch and evening gatherings every month. We are working for a continued growth of the Swedish colony in the Carolinas. Speakers are invited to address issues we know are of interest to our members whenever possible. Mothers with toddlers meet a couple of times per week at different community park throughout RTP. Please visit our website for planned events and park meeting schedules.
During the year the members treat themselves to semlor (lent-buns) and Swedish movies. Celebrates Valborgsmässoafton (Walpurgis Night bonfires), arrange herring dinners, kräftskiva (crayfish parties) pea-soup with punch-liquor. In December it culminates with our biggest fundraising event, the Scandinavian Julmarknad (Christmas Fair) held at the Cary Senior Center togehter with VASA. We end the year with a rewarding glöggparty and Lucia celebration in mid-December with spouses and SACC-Swedish American Chamber of Commerce.
Through SWEA in North Carolina we know that we together can enrich your everyday living and find new friends for life.
